Grant program for arts extended

Each year, Rutherford County is given a certain amount of money to provide access to arts experiences.

This year, the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program subgrant application deadline has been extended to the end of June.

“The council allots money for every county for arts,” said RaeAnn Turner, Rutherford County deputy finance director. “We put it out there for people to apply and we have a committee that looks at the applications.”

The county was given $17,000 for fiscal year 2013-14 as part of the grant program.

Turner said the deadline was May 31, 2013 but it was extended to allow for other programs in the county to seek out grant funding.

“The funding is yearly and, if we don’t use them, we will lose them the following year,” Turner said.

Thus far, the Rutherford Community Theater, Symphony of Rutherford County, Forest City Repertory Theater, Chamber of Consort and Visual Arts Guild have been awarded grant funding.

Additionally, there has been funding provided for an arts summer camp with Roscoe Conn. Turner said that event drew a grant for $2,200.

She said there is no maximum or minimum for amounts sought.

“There really isn’t an average award because it depends on what it planned,” Turner said. “The awards can be very different.”

The grants are available for nonprofit organizations whose purpose is to promote and develop diverse cultural arts programming in the county. Funding priority is given to qualified arts organizations such as theaters, galleries, choral societies and festivals, to provide events conducted by qualified artists.

Grassroots funding is not usually awarded to arts organizations that receive funding through the North Carolina Arts Council’s State Arts Resources.

Projects applying for grant funding must take place between July 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014.

“It’s a wonderful program and I have learned that as I have gotten more and more into it over the last few weeks,” Turner said.

Application forms and guidelines are available on the Rutherford County website, For more information, contact Turner at 828-287-6087 or email
