Gearing up for a new season

Music is in the air at Chase.

The Chase High School Trojan Marching Band is preparing for its upcoming season. The 2013 show, "Raging Machines," features music from the Transformers soundtrack in addition to "Caliber" by Erik Morales, "Gadget" by Randall Standridge and "Raging Machines" by Brian Balmages.

"I thought this would make a nice show theme and have good music and good visuals," Band Director Michael Henderson said. "I want to make people forget its a high school band and get into it."

The 87-member band began the season with camp this week. They have been learning their music and the sets for marching. Cierra Elley, Audra Dowden and Elizabeth Phillips are the new drum majors for the season. They are taking over for three-year veterans Alex Larsen and Macy Phillips.

"Band camp has a very successful experience for the staff and students," Henderson said. "The drum majors have been working really hard this week. They had some big shoes to fill."

Elley will be a senior and is hoping to make her last year in band a great one.

"I wanted to be a drum major because it's an exciting opportunity to serve the band and a good way to be a leader in the community," Alley said. "I love working with these amazing people and I love music. It's an influential part of my life."

Henderson, the drum majors and staff members have their work cut out for them with the biggest rookie class they have ever had. The staff of the band has been increased to accommodate the growing numbers.

Staff includes Jenn Henderson, color guard; David Bradley, high brass instructor; Norman Moore, pit percussion instructor; Ed Kiefer, composer; Christyl Barber, percussion arranger; Kenneth Collins, percussion coordinator; J.J. Gibbs, low brass technician and Hannah Millwood, pit percussion technician.

"We've had a lot of changes in a lot of sections that we think will help us," Henderson said. "It's going to be a good year."

Performances this year will include a Wofford College football game, a performance in Dollywood and hosting their 2nd annual Trojan Tournament of Bands.
