ELLENBORO — An elderly man, Hubert Brooks of Cleveland Road in Ellenboro, lost his home to a fire Thursday at about 11:30 a.m.
According to Ellenboro Assitant Fire Chief Robbie Downey, when firefighters arrived at the wood frame structure, it was 50 percent involved with fire and smoke.
Brooks and his dog were standing outside the structure and were not injured.
Downey said Brooks had put wood in his wood stove and apparently didn't get the wood stove door closed and went back outside. There were some paint cans nearby and Brooks told firefighters, he heard them exploding.
When the first firefighter arrived at he scene, Downey said Brooks was "trying to put the fire with a bucket of water."
There was no insurance on the house and it is a total loss.
The American Red Cross was called to assist Brooks with emergency needs such as food, shelter and clothes.
Assisting Ellenboro were Cherry Mountain and Bostic firefighters.
Rutherford County Sheriff's Dept. responded to 107 calls on Wednesday; Forest City police had 66 calls; Rutherfordton police had 23 calls; Spindale was dispatched to 20 police calls and Lake Lure had five calls; Rutherford County EMS responded to 38 calls and Rescue had 30 calls.
Bills Creek firefighters responded to a motor vehicle accident and Spindale responded to an electrical fire.
James Michael Camp, 56, Winder Street in Spindale, charged with felony possession marijuana; unsecured bond, $30,000 bond.
Mary Kelly Charles, 52, Fernwood Drive in Rutherfordton, charged with giving wine to a person underage; $1,000 unsecured bond.
Justin Christopher Dillon, 19, Poors Ford Road in Rutherfordton, charged with two misdemeanor probation violation; $10,000 bond.
David Ray Gurley, 33, Crowe's Wood Drive in Bostic, charged with failure to appear on allowing unlicensed to drive; no liability insurance and failure to appear on driving,allow no registration; $1,000 bond.
Amanda Dawn Shuping, 22, Grassy Creek Road in Lenior, charged with failure to appear on driving while license revoked; faiure to report accident; failure to appear on reckless driving to endanger;$1,000 bond.
Justin Dean Tipton, 23, Blossom Drive in Bostic, charged with possession controlled controlled substance, methamphetamine, misdemeanor larceny, resisting public officer and possession drug paraphernalia; $35,00 bond.
Stanley Walker of Mooresboro reported a larceny.
Jenny Holland of Forest City reported a breaking, entering and larceny.
Amanda Greene of Ellenboro reported a breaking, entering and larceny.
Stephen Deyton of Ellenboro reported a larceny.
Thomas Dumas, of Spruce St. in Forest City, reported an incident of breaking and entering.
Bethany Mae Watt reported an incident of breaking and entering and damage to property that occurred on West Spruce St. in Forest City.
Barbara Holland reported an incident of breaking and entering and obtaining property by false pretense that occurred on Beaver St. in Forest City.
An employee of James Motors, Inc. reported an incident of breaking and entering and damage to property.
An employee of Wal-Mart reported an incident of found narcotics.
