The Rutherford County Landfill and convenience centers will be closed on Monday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day. The landfill and all centers will resume normal operation hours on Tuesday, May 27.

5K Run Against Addiction, Fun Run and Community Wellness Event: Inaugural race where every step has a purpose to fight addiction in the community, county and beyond; race begins at 8 a.m. at The Epicenter Church on Countryside Drive in Forest City; pre-register for $25 at or on race-day from 7-7:30 a.m.; proceeds to benefit Rutherford County Sheriff's Office G.R.E.A.T. Program and House of Refuge; following the races will be a community wellness event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with food, entertainment and vendors.

Children's Clothing and Shoes Sale: Washburn Community Outreach Center Thrift Store sale with items for .75 cents; great selection of summer clothing in various sizes; proceeds will help feed those in the community that are facing poverty; store is located at 2934 Piney Mountain Church Road in Bostic; hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m.; for more information call 828-245-5603.

ReStore Memorial Day Event: Stop by the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 686 West Main Street in Forest City for new merchandise donated by Lowe's, pocketbooks, jewelry and refreshments; event is 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Lake Lure Arts and Crafts Spring Festival: Free community festival with 100+ vendors, food, entertainment and kid's zone at the arcade building in Lake Lure across from the beach; event is today from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Monday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; for more information contact Hickory Nut Gorge Outreach at 828-625-4683.

KidSenses Memorial Day Celebration: Kids attending the museum will have an opportunity to create a giant handprint flag for all to see; be sure to wear red, white and blue to celebrate; event begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.; event free with general admission.

Women's Auxiliary Pancake Breakfast: The auxiliary of Fairfield Mountains FD will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.; located at the fire department on Buffalo Creek Road.

Memorial Day Service: Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery will have a Memorial Day service at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Chad Hayes, pastor at Goodes Creek Baptist Church, offering the invocation; the Rev. Scott Butler, pastor at Chase Baptist Church, will be the guest speaker; special music by Mike Lawing and Lyn Westafer; public invited.
