A 30-year newspaper veteran has been named the new publisher of The Daily Courier.

Wanda Moeller started her new role on Monday. She replaced Jake Volcsko, who was named a member of the Digital Team for Calkins Media, based in Pennsylvania.

Moeller will be responsible for the overseeing the entire operation of The Daily Courier, including and Rutherford County People — The Courier's total market coverage product. All are owned by Paxton Media, based in Kentucky.

"It is a different kind of challenge for me and this is a great family newspaper group," Moeller said.

Prior to joining The Daily Courier, Moeller served as General Manager of The Ashland Daliy Press in Ashland, Wisc. There, she was responsible for supervising staff, business development and directed the newsroom in the "Digital first, print best" philosophy.

Moeller also worked as general manager for newspapers in Hibbing, Minn., Hayward, Wisc., and editor for papers in Grand Rapids, Minn., Walker Minn., and Pella, Iowa.

"After shoveling 129 inches of snow every year, this is a nice change," Moeller quipped.

Moeller is a native of Iowa and graduated from Buena Vista University in 1982 with a BA in Mass Communications.

She has also worked with the American Press Institute on "Managing the Community Newspaper" and "Leadership for Middle Managers."

She said, initially, she will spend time evaluating the paper and learning more about the community of Rutherford County.

"We're going to look at the paper as a whole and see what our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges are," Moeller said. "We have readership challenges and we want to make sure we are covering news our readers want to read.

"We want to make sure we are touching our readers on a daily basis."
