NC Senate strips McCrory of appointments

The state Senate has stripped Republican Governor Pat McCrory of the power to appoint all the members of a three-member commission that makes the final decision on unemployment insurance benefits for North Carolinians.

The Senate approved the measure without discussion Thursday to update the state's unemployment insurance system.

The bill follows a spat in a Senate committee earlier this week, where an official from the governor's office said lawmakers were bullying the office over the appointments.

Two members would be appointed the General Assembly and one by the governor. The members would serve staggered four year terms representing employees, employers and the general public.

The Senate also approved a business court modernization bill. Wake Sen. Tamara Barringer says the new rules will make courts more predictable for businesses and people.
