Grover Norquist visiting NC as tax debate grows

An influential national anti-tax advocate says he's not taking sides in North Carolina's tax reform debate as Republicans in the House and Senate have released competing plans.

Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist visited the Legislative Building on Thursday to begin two days of public events in the state to support tax overhaul.

Norquist attended a news conference with Senate leader Phil Berger and praised his chamber's tax plan efforts. Senate Republicans want to subject many more services to the sales tax than House Republicans, who released their own plan Thursday. Both plans would reduce income and sales tax rates.

Norquist said he supports compromise as long as legislators lower tax rates.

Norquist visited House Speaker Thom Tillis before a scheduled rally on the state government mall.
