Feds doing more oversight at SC nuke plant

Federal officials are doing more oversight at a South Carolina nuclear power plant because of an incident last year.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Monday it would be doing a follow-up inspection at Duke Energy's H.B. Robinson plant near Hartsville.

A diesel generator at Robinson automatically shut down in October when radiator fan belts failed. Officials said no one was in danger but noted that poorly maintained belts could have contributed to a generator not being available during a loss of power or fire.

The NRC stepped up scrutiny at Robinson after incidents in 2010 that included fires, a faulty emergency generator breaker and inadequate worker training. In 2011, a false alarm sounded in a reactor containment building while the unit was being brought back on line.
