A Portland, Ore.-based shopping bag manufacturer will be locating its East Coast operations in Rutherford County.

On Tuesday, Bonita Manufacturing Products, Inc. doing business as Bonita Pioneer, announced the creation of 50 jobs and an investment of more than $2.8 million over the next three years.

“We began working with this company in January 2013 so this has been a very long process,” said Matt Blackwell, Rutherford County economic development commission director. “But it is rewarding to have a company come and create new jobs and invest in our community.”

Bonita Pioneer plans to use the facility — located at the Riverstone Business Park off U.S. 221 north of the Horsehead Corporation’s new facility — to manufacture paper shopping bags with twisted handles. The building was constructed in 2001 and has never been occupied. It is owned by Stonecutter Corporation.

“Of course the company will have to up fit that building to fit their needs,” Blackwell said. “There will be about $1.5 million in construction to get it to where they need it. The building is in fantastic condition and we are glad they will be putting the building to use.”
